Coat Type SD-Locus (Shedding MC5R)
Kodas: H299
Short description
The growth and maintenance of a dog’s coat, including the degree to which it sheds its coat, is a complex trait affected by multiple different genes.
General information
The growth and maintenance of a dog’s coat, including the degree to which it sheds its coat, is a complex trait affected by multiple different genes. One such gene is the melanocortin 5 receptor (MC5R). A mutation to MC5R has been found to have a link to decreased shedding. Selecting for this mutation may therefore be of interest for the breeding of dogs that shed less hair.
Specifications

Clinical features
When scored on a scale of light (0) to heavy (1) shedding, dogs carrying at least one copy of the MC5R mutation show a far lower degree of shedding than dogs lacking the mutation. The effect is strongest for medium-haired dogs that lack wire-hair and/or furnishings.
Additional information
Coat shedding is a multifactorial trait, influenced by multiple different genes and environmental factors.
